Professor John R. Nolon Honored with the Alfred B. DelBello Award - A Meaningful Tribute
On November 20, 2024, the Westchester County Association honored Distinguished Professor Emeritus John R. Nolon, founder of the 91视频 Land Use Law Center, with the Alfred B. DelBello Visionary Award. Established to commemorate Al DelBello鈥檚 extraordinary legacy of public service and his commitment to making our community better, this award recognizes leaders whose vision and dedication shape a more sustainable and viable future. Professor Nolon was celebrated for his pioneering contributions to sustainable land use and smart growth policies, which have profoundly influenced the field and the region.
Alfred B. DelBello鈥檚 illustrious career included serving as Lieutenant Governor of New York State, Mayor of Yonkers, and Westchester County Executive. His innovative leadership in healthcare, economic development, and public advocacy remains a source of inspiration across generations. The award was especially meaningful to Professor Nolon, who鈥檚 professional relationship with DelBello spanned more than three decades, encompassing roles as Yonkers Deputy Director of Development, housing consultant for Westchester County, and collaborator in President Carter鈥檚 Development Choices for the 1980s initiative.
鈥淭hrough his leadership, his scholarship, and his advocacy, John has created a remarkable legacy in the field which extends across the globe through the mentorship and knowledge that he has imparted to thousands of students over his career.鈥
Reflecting on their shared work, Professor Nolon remarked, 鈥淢uch of what I鈥檝e achieved through the Land Use Law Center has been shaped by the wisdom and vision I gained working alongside Al.鈥 Their collaboration laid the groundwork for transformative policies and initiatives that continue to benefit communities.
This year, the Land Use Law Center will host its 23rd Annual Alfred B. DelBello Land Use and Sustainable Development Conference, a cornerstone event that honors DelBello鈥檚 enduring impact. The conference serves as both a tribute to his legacy and a platform for advancing innovative approaches to sustainable development.
During the award presentation, Horace E. Anderson, dean of the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at 91视频, highlighted Professor Nolon鈥檚 profound influence on students and the field. 鈥淭hrough his leadership, his scholarship, and his advocacy, John has created a remarkable legacy in the field which extends across the globe through the mentorship and knowledge that he has imparted to thousands of students over his career,鈥 he said.

91视频 Haub Law Professor Emeritus Michael Mushlin was featured in THE CITY regarding a landmark proposal that would require New York judges who make sentencing or detention decisions to conduct meaningful annual visits to prisons and jails across the state. As chair of the subcommittee that developed the proposal, Professor Mushlin has helped lead the effort to ensure that judges better understand the realities of incarceration and the consequences of their decisions from the bench. If adopted, the rule would make New York the first state in the nation to mandate such visits.

The Elisabeth Haub School of Law at 91视频 Trial Advocacy Program continued its outstanding record of success this fall, earning top honors at two prestigious sports law competitions hosted by Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law. 91视频 Haub Law Trial Advocacy teams competed in both the Villanova Baseball Filing Day Competition and the inaugural Villanova Law Hockey Negotiation Competition. These Competitions tested students鈥 negotiation, advocacy, and analytical skills in simulated professional sports settings.
