Faculty Bio

Dr. Kimberly Collica-Cox is a distinguished Professor in the Criminal Justice Department at 91��Ƶ and the Director of Dyson College of Arts and Sciences’ Jail-Based Services. With a career spanning three decades in correctional work, she is a leading authority on rehabilitative and reintegrative initiatives in the carceral setting. Dr. Collica-Cox holds a Ph.D. and M.Phil. from the CUNY Graduate Center, along with an M.A. and B.A. from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and is currently completing an M.S. in Mental Health Counseling at 91��Ƶ.

A prolific scholar, Dr. Collica-Cox maintains a strong research agenda that explores correctional programming, the professional trajectories of women executives in the field, and the efficacy of animal-assisted interventions within carceral settings. She is widely published in academic journals and has authored influential books, such as Women Corrections Executives: The Keys to Reaching the Top (2023) and Female Prisoners, AIDS, and Peer Programs: How Female Offenders Transform Their Lives (2013). Her work consistently bridges the gap between academic theory and the practical realities of the carceral system.

Prior to teaching, Dr. Collica worked for a women's correctional facility in NYS coordinating an HIV prison-based peer education program and for a NY jail supervising their jail-based transitional services unit. She trained professionals in HIV- related issues in the NYS Metropolitan area and was the lead trainer in the lower Hudson Valley regarding HIV and Incarceration. She is a certified CPR, First Aid and AED instructor. Her Center, Collica-Cox Correctional Consulting, LLC, is an HSI Training Center (kimjail.wix.com/correctionconsulting).

Dr. Collica-Cox serves as the University’s only Inside-Out instructor, facilitating a unique learning environment where 91��Ƶ students and individuals who are incarcerated study together at the Westchester County Department of Correction. She leads several innovative initiatives, most notably the Parenting, Prison & Pups program, in collaboration with Hudson Valley Paws For A Cause, integrating animal-assisted therapy and 91��Ƶ undergraduate teaching assistants into evidence-based parenting curricula. Building on this success, she co-directs Puppies on the Block, a dog fostering and training program for men and women incarcerated at the Westchester County Jail in collaboration with Paws Crossed Animal Shelter.

In her academic role, Dr. Collica-Cox is a subject matter expert in corrections, providing expert witness testimony and policy guidance, as well as serving as a certified auditor for both the American Correctional Association (ACA) and the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). A dedicated advocate for evidence-based reform, Dr. Collica-Cox focuses on translating complex research into actionable policy, championing transformative programs that offer meaningful pathways for change.

Beyond her research and teaching, she is a dedicated mentor and community leader who bridges the gap between the classroom and the community, serving as the Vice President of the Westchester County Corrections Advisory board, adviser to 91��Ƶ’s Criminal Justice and Honors Societies, among others. Her unique ability to combine academic rigor with compassionate, hands-on service has made her a vital resource for both the University and the New York criminal justice community.

Born and raised in NY, her and her husband have 6 children, 3 grandchildren, a cat, and 91��Ƶ/Westchester Jail's resident Therapy Dog, Anna.
